My name is Melanie Mertens and I am from South Kingstown, Rhode Island. I have lived in my current home since I was three, so I have resided near the University of Rhode Island nearly my entire life. Although this is true, I had never actually been on campus until I attended an open house here when I was looking at colleges. Sure, I learned to swim in the pools in Keaney and gone ice skating at Boss Arena, but I never realized how much more there was to this university! I am a Human Development and Family Studies major with a concentration in Early Childhood Education. My career goal is to become a kindergarten or preschool teacher and maybe someday I would like to open a childcare center. Throughout my life I have been involved in Girl Scouts! With that said, I love volunteering! Every summer during high school, I volunteered at a Girl Scout camp located in Kington, Rhode Island teaching younger girls songs, games, and camping skills, and I was so excited to be a councilor there this past summer! In addition to that, I did gymnastics and babysat in high school which took up most of my time. When I'm not doing any of those things, you can probably find me watching Disney movies because they are basically my life. My favorite is The Little Mermaid, because I love singing along to all the music in it! One of my biggest fears coming into college was actually that my roommates would not like Disney movies, but thankfully they love them too (I mean not as much as me obviously, but still)! So that's me, a Girl Scout, gymnast, babysitting, Disney fanatic! Try not to confuse me with anyone else!
